FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is a federal immigration program in Canada that allows individuals with certain skills and work experience to apply for permanent residency. To be eligible for the FSWP, applicants must meet criteria such as a minimum level of work experience in a skilled occupation, language proficiency, and education. Points are awarded for factors such as age, education, language ability, and work experience, and a minimum score is required for eligibility. The goal of the FSWP is to attract highly skilled workers to Canada who can contribute to the economy and help address labor market needs.

 

This is 1 of the 3 federal programs managed through Express Entry, our online application system for skilled workers.

 

This program has minimum requriemnts for: 

  • Skilled work experience

    • you’ve worked in 1 of these National Occupation Classification (NOC) TEER Categories:  TEER 0-3

    • have performed all essential and most of the main duties set out in the lead statement of the occupational descript in the NOC

    • your work experience must be the same type of job you use for your immigration application 

    • your work experience must be within the last 10 years

    • the work must be paid (volunteer or unpaid internships do not count) 

    • at least 1 year of continuous work or 1,560 hours total (30 hours per week)

    • work experience while you were studying may count if the work was: 

      • paid 

      • continuous 

      • meets all other program requirements 

  • Language ability 

    • Take approved language tests in English or French and get a minimum score of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in writing, reading, listening and speaking. 

  • Education 

    • Canadian education: 

      • Must have a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary or post-secondary institution 

    • Foreign education 

      • Completed credential and. An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to demonstrate that your education is equal to a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary or post-secondary institution

Applications submitted under the FSW category are assessed through a points system based on six selection criteria:

 

  1. Age

  2. Education 

  3. Language proficiency in English and French 

  4. Age

  5. Arranged employment 

  6. Adaptability 

 

Your points are dependent upon how well you do in each of the 6 factors. In order to qualify, you must score a minimum of 67 points out of a possible 100. 

 

Once you are in the Express Entry pool, IRCC selects the highest-ranking candidates from the pool and invite them to apply for permanent residence.
