POST-GRADUATE WORK PERMIT

HOW TO SPONSOR A SPOUSE, COMMON-LAW, OR CONJUGAL PARTNER TO CANADA?

Post-Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWPP) allows students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institution to obtain an open work permit (allowed to seek and accept employment and to work for any employer for a specified period of time) to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Once a PGWP is granted, it may be valid for the length of the program of study and may not exceed three years. Once the PGWP expires, the student must apply for an LMIA and a work permit (or qualify under another applicable program) to maintain valid temporary resident status as a worker in Canada.

Students with a valid study permit when applying for PGWPP but has completed their program of study are authorized to work full time until IRCC renders a final decision provided they meet all of the following criteria:

  • they are or were holders of a valid study permit at the time of the post-graduation work permit application

  • they were a full-time student enrolled at a DLI in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program

  • they were authorized to work off-campus without a work permit

  • they did not exceed the allowable hours of work
