VISITOR VISA

HOW TO SPONSOR A SPOUSE, COMMON-LAW, OR CONJUGAL PARTNER TO CANADA?

DO YOU NEED A TOURIST VISA TO COME TO
CANADA ?

Generally, a tourist visa is required to travel to Canada for tourism or leisure. However, depending upon which country you are coming from, you may be visa-exempt and, instead, must apply for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization).

Some people may be exempt based on the following:

  • Nationality – Citizens of certain countries do not require a visa to enter Canada

  • The type of Travel Document – Some people do not require a visa depending on the documents they hold (i.e. Diplomat’s passport)

  • How you enter Canada –  Would you travel to Canada by air, sea, train, car or foot?

If you are a Visa-exempt visitor and want to come to Canada for leisure or tourism, and if your stay is less than six months, all you will need to do is obtain an eTA before you travel to Canada.

If you’re not visa-exempt, you will need a Visitor Visa before taking a plane to travel to Canada. If your application is approved, the visa office will provide you with a multiple-entry or single-entry visa.

  • have a valid travel document (i.e., passport)

  • Must be admissible to canada (i.e. not a risk to the security of Canada)

  • satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit.

EXTEND YOUR CANADIAN VISITOR VISA AND APPLY FOR A VISITOR RECORD

You must apply for a Visitor Record if you received as Visitor Visa and wish to stay longer in Canada. You must apply for a visitor record before your current status expires.

A visitor record is a document that continues to give you status as a visitor in Canada and allows you to stay longer. It does not guarantee that you can leave and then re-enter. You must leave Canada before the new end date mentioned on your Visitor Record.

You can legally stay in Canada until IRCC reaches a final decision on your Visitor Record application.
